Where is that Narrow Road?
Jesus said, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-15) How do you visualize the broad and narrow roads? I used to think of them as running parallel with the one being like a four-lane freeway and the other like a hiking trail through rough terrain. But recently a new idea was shared with me, which seems more biblical. What if the narrow road ran right up the center of the broad road, just in the opposite direction? Taking the narrow road would mean walking a very public, counter-cultural and seemingly ridiculous (dare we say offensive) route through life. It does not accommodate fakes. You can’t have one foot on one road and one on the other, or it will tear you apart. And that is the problem with half-way living, it tears us apart instead of giving us life. Being ‘all-in’ with Jesus is a full commitment to this very public, unequivocal and counterintuitive path. If that is an acceptable image of the two paths, which one are you traveling on today?
